Junior defensive end Kelvin Cain is no longer on the University of Miami football team.
Whether Cain quit or was kicked off the team depends on who is asked. A UM spokesman said Thursday that Cain left the team last week before the Hurricanes’ 33-20 loss to Florida State.
But during a brief phone interview Thursday, Cain said he had not quit but was trying to “take care of an issue” and hopes to rejoin the team soon. Cain, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound native of Clovis, Calif., did not elaborate on his situation.
Coach Al Golden was not available to reporters following Thursday’s practice and won’t speak to the media until Saturday.
Cain is the second Hurricane to quit this month. Reserve offensive tackle Jermaine Johnson left the team in early October.
Cain played in seven games this season and had one of the Hurricanes’ nine sacks. He was listed as a backup to starter Shayon Green early in the season but was not listed on the depth chart in recent weeks.
