THREE STORYLINES

1. How do the quarterbacks look? Starter Vad Lee and backup Justin Thomas can demonstrate why they are probably the most talented quarterbacks that coach Paul Johnson has brought to Tech. Lee will make his first career start, and Thomas will play in his first career game.

2. Has the defense improved? The Yellow Jackets' defense hopes to embody speed, intensity and effort in the debut of defensive coordinator Ted Roof, the third coordinator of Johnson's tenure. Much is expected of defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu.

3. Will there be touchbacks? Freshman kicker Harrison Butker, perhaps the most anticipated member of the 2013 signing class, can address the kicking-game issues that have troubled Tech in recent years.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

David Sims vs. Jonathan Spain. Playing the feature position of Tech's spread-option offense, B-back Sims had an excellent preseason camp. He figures to be charging often in the direction of Spain, Elon's middle linebacker and team leader in tackles last season and a player Johnson said could play at the FBS level.
