Gators cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy was arrested Sunday and charged with a misdemeanor count of marijuana possession.
Purifoy was riding in the back seat of a car early Sunday, and the driver was stopped for a right-of-way violation. The Gainesville Police Department officer smelled marijuana and saw a passenger throw a marijuana joint out the window, according to the arrest report. He later discovered a bag with 2.5 grams of marijuana between the driver and passenger seats.
Purifoy is due in court Feb. 21 for his arraignment, according to Alachua County Clerk of Court records.
A spokesperson for the program said coach Will Muschamp was aware of the incident and is handling it.
As a sophomore last season, he started 12 games and recorded 61 tackles, five pass break-ups, three forced fumbles and two blocked kicks. He also played receiver in a limited role, and Muschamp plans to work him mainly at receiver this spring.
Since taking over the program in January 2011, Muschamp has endured 15 arrests by 13 players. Eight of those arrests have been for marijuana possession.
Offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker, from Boynton Beach High School, was arrested last month and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle for driving a scooter that had been reported stolen. He also was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license.
His case is pending, and the state still is deciding whether to press forward with the charges.
Gators add new recruits: After signing 28 players on Wednesday, Florida picked up two more.
The program confirmed the receipt of a national letter of intent from Johnny Townsend, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound punter from Orlando-Boone.
The Gators also got a commitment from tight end Trevon Young, who is expected to finalize his letter of intent soon. He is a 6-foot-6, 260-pound prospect who was mainly a basketball star at Bradenton-Braden River.
