Take that, from the start to the finish.
Trae Young hit a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give the Hawks a 130-127 victory over the Spurs in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion.
Young finished with 22 points, seven assists and two steals – and a muscle flex after the game-winner. Young was 8 of 18 from the field, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range.
"I knew we were tied," Young said of the final shot. "If I made it, it was good. If I missed it, we were going into overtime. I just wanted to make sure it was the last shot we put up."
Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce said the final shot came in the flow of the game after the Spurs tied the game.
“We call it Trae dribble down and shoot,” Pierce said. “It was just an in-between situation. There were 15, 16 seconds left on the clock and trying to get organized on the fly. We didn’t have any timeouts left and Trae has done that. He was probably waiting for that moment to let one fly.”
Taurean Prince might want to save his start for the regular season.
The Hawks forward scored 25 points. He made his first seven shots, including two 3-pointers, and scored 16 points in the first 5-1/2 minutes of the game. At that mark, he had 16 of the Hawks’ first 19 points. Prince added six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The Hawks (2-2) scored 38 third-quarter points to take a 100-92 lead into the fourth quarter. The Spurs came back and tied the game, including 127-127 with 12 seconds remaining.
The Hawks had seven double-digit scorers. Alex Len (16), Kent Bazemore (15), DeAndre Bembry (14), Alex Poythress (12) and Jeremy Lin (10) were the others. Len added 10 rebounds.
Rudy Gay had 28 points for the Spurs (2-2).
The Hawks played without injured John Collins, Dewayne Dedmon, Justin Anderson and Daniel Hamilton. The Spurs did not play starting center LaMarcus Aldridge.
