The Hawks signed forward Tyler Cavanaugh to a two-way to shore up their depleted frontcourt. He joined the team before its game at the Cavaliers on Sunday.
The Hawks signed Cavanaugh in September and waived him prior to training camp. He subsequently signed with the team’s G-League affiliate in Erie, Pa.. Cavanaugh said Erie’s team runs an “identical” system to the Hawks.
Coach Mike Budenholzer said Cavanaugh can contribute right away.
“He has continued to work on all the things we’ve been doing,” Budenholzer said. “He was good for us in the preseason and it will be nice to have him ready and willing to help.”
Cavanaugh, 23, wasn’t selected in the 2017 draft after playing collegiately at George Washington and Wake Forest. His two-way contract stipulates that he can spend no more than 41 days with the Hawks, with the balance of the season at Erie.
“I’m ready,” Cavanaugh said before the Hawks played the Cavaliers. “I’m excited for the opportunity. It’s just cool to be here for a regular-season game and hopefully we can get a win.”
Three Hawks frontcourt players are out with injuries.
Ersan Ilyasova (knee), the starting power forward, has missed four games. His replacement in the lineup, Mike Muscala (knee), didn’t make the trip to Cleveland after playing against the Rockets on Friday. Center Miles Plumlee (quadriceps) has yet to play this season.
Reserve guard Malcolm Delaney (ankle) also didn’t play against the Cavs after sitting out the Rockets game on Friday. DeAndre Bembry (wrist) has been out since getting hurt in the season opener.
Budenholzer said Delaney could play on Monday against the Celtics but that Muscala would be held out with the hope he can be ready to play at Detroit on Friday.
