Former Lakers legend Michael Cooper has been hired as the Dream’s new coach. The team will make an announcement later today.
Cooper is replacing Fred Williams, who was moved to an advisory role earlier this year after the Dream were swept in the WNBA finals. Dream co-owners Mary Brock and Kelly Loeffler are still searching for a general manager. Williams held both roles.
Cooper resigned as coach of the USC women’s basketball team in March. In four years, Cooper and the Trojans went 72-57. He coached the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks for eight seasons (2000-04, 2007-09), leading them to a 167-85 record, three Western Conference titles and two WNBA titles.
Cooper was a part of five NBA championship teams with the Lakers.
Williams, formerly an assistant coach, was promoted to coach and general manager in Aug. 2012 after Marynell Meadors was fired. He had been with the Dream since the inaugural 2008 season. The Dream went 17-17 during the 2013 regular season under Williams.
