It’s only been one day but Pero Antic hates the mask.

The Hawks center has been fitted with a protective mask after surgery to repair a broken nose suffered in training camp. On Monday, Antic returned to full contact practice after the injury caused by an accidental elbow from rookie Adreian Payne.

“It is difficult to play with the mask,” Antic said. “It’s the first time in my life I’ve had an injury to my nose. It’s difficult to see. It’s difficult to adjust. But I have to wear it.”

Antic said the mask fogs up and affects his peripheral vision. The original plan was for Antic to wear the mask until at least Nov. 1. That would mean just one regular-season game, the season-opener Oct. 29 at the Raptors.

Antic had a checkup prior to Monday’s practice and the doctor was pleased with the healing process. He will have another examination in 10 days.

Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said he expects Antic to play in at least one of the team’s three exhibition games this week.

“Hopefully by the end of the week we’ll be able to throw him in,” Budenholzer said.
