NL West notes
Diamondbacks
Called up on June 1, David Peralta reeled off an eight-game hitting streak, the longest to start a career by a Diamondback. Through 32 major league games, Peralta has 14 multi-hit games and is batting .330. Not bad for a player who started his career as a pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals’ system. … Bronson Arroyo will have Tommy John surgery, becoming the third Diamondbacks pitcher to undergo the ligament-replacement procedure this year. … GM Kevin Towers underwent vocal cord surgery in New York.
Dodgers
Carl Crawford could spend significant time on the bench when he returns, manager Don Mattingly intimated, according to the Los Angeles Times. The former All-Star left fielder has been sidelined since May 28 because of a sprained ankle and problems with his Achilles tendon. In Crawford’s absence, Matt Kemp has become the Dodgers’ primary left fielder. Mattingly implied that wouldn’t change. “We’re playing pretty good and I don’t expect to be making a bunch of changes,” he said.
Giants
GM Brian Sabean, 100 percent true to form, didn’t couch his analysis in abstract terms or statistical nuance. He watched this Giants team race to a 42-21 start through early June and he has endured the long, steep decline from there. “It’s confusing-for obvious reasons,” Sabean told the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News. “I think you have to be as patient as you possibly can because certain things have to play out. Unfortunately, we’ve leaked oil in a lot of areas. That further confuses what you think you might want to do or have to do in and around the trade deadline.” The Giants are open for business in the trade market and there is nobody in the farm system-or perhaps even on the major-league roster-who is off-limits for discussion.
Padres
RHP Tyson Ross, the Padres’ lone All-Star representative, is scheduled to start Sunday against the Dodgers and won’t pitch in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic, though he’ll be in attendance for the festivities, according to manager Bud Black. … Ian Kennedy’s team-leading 19th start tied him for the most starts in the majors this season. Kennedy (7-9) has worked six or more innings in 15 of his starts this year.
Rockies
From the Gazette (Colorado Springs, Colo.): ‘Tis the season for trade talk. With SS Troy Tulowitzki on an MVP-caliber tear and his team tumbling from relevance, again, the 29-year-old is bound to be the target of trade speculation when the baseball world converges on Minnesota. That’s the way it goes. So it’s not hard to see why the prospect of acquiring several young arms - in exchange for Tulo - is viewed as an attractive proposition. Even so, the idea of trusting the front office to land the right players in return for Tulo should cause great concern.
