He watched Reds All-Star catcher Devin Mesoraco catch fastballs clocked at 104 and 103 mph and decided he wanted no part of that. “You see the reaction from Mesoraco,” Montero said. “Every time he catches the ball it’s like, ‘Oh, pain!’”

Dodgers

Darwin Barney, a former Gold Glove Award winner, was acquired from the Cubs to back up at second base, third base and shortstop. Barney, 28, was designated for assignment last week by the Cubs. A Gold Glove second baseman in 2012, he is batting .230 this season. He is earning $2.3 million this season – the Cubs will cover a portion of his remaining salary – and will be eligible for salary arbitration for the next two years. … Fans will continue hearing that opening line (“A pleasant good evening”) from 86-year-old Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully, who will return to the booth for his record 66th season in 2015. The announcement was made by a trio of players on the stadium video board during the game.

2B Dan Uggla committed three errors in three games last week. Manager Bruce Bochy: “It’s a tough game sometimes. You’re going to make errors.” Uggla was released by the Braves where he hit just .162 with a .241 on-base percentage. Uggla was at second after Marco Scutaro was placed on the DL. … Tim Hudson (8-8) is 1-6 with a 4.32 ERA over his past eight starts.

Padres

Jason Lane (37 years, 219 days) became the oldest San Diego starting pitcher to make his big league debut. The mark was previously held by Walter Silva, who was 32 when he started against the Dodgers in 2009. The last pitcher to make his first start after his 37th birthday was St. Louis’ Troy Percival in 2007. Normally a reliever, Percival pitched one inning at the start on the final day of the regular season.

Rockies

Left-handed reliever Boone Logan, who was activated from the DL (diverticulitis/intestinal inflammation), said the pain from his diverticulitis was debilitating and affected his pitching shoulder. “My (left) collarbone was killing me,” he said. “It was like it was broke in half because of the pain shooting.” … 1B Justin Morneau returned from the DL after an MRI of his neck showed no serious damage, such as nerve impingement. “Hopefully it’s good to for the rest of the year,” he said.
