ARLINGTON, Texas – When Julio Teheran pitched a complete game without allowing any earned runs and still lost to the Rangers on Saturday, it was an occasion to bring up the name of iconic former Braves pitcher Greg Maddux for a couple of a reasons.

Teheran took a no-hitter to the sixth inning and allowed only three hits, three unearned runs and one walk with six strikeouts in eight innings in the 3-2 loss, becoming the first Braves pitcher since Maddux in 1999 to lose while pitching a complete game with no earned runs allowed.

Teheran’s fourth complete game of the season also gave him the most for a Braves pitcher since 2000, when Maddux had six complete games and Tom Glavine had four. Remarkably, Teheran has a 0.53 ERA and .143 opponents’ average in his four complete games, but only a 2-2 record.

He allowed five hits and two runs in eight innings of a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers on July 31, when counterpart Clayton Kershaw gave up nine hits and one run in nine innings.

Teheran is 13-12 despite a 2.89 ERA in 31 starts, and teammate Alex Wood is just 10-10 with a 2.83 ERA in 33 games (22 starts).

By the way, Maddux was charged with eight hits, four unearned runs and one walk in nine innings of that 4-3 loss to Montreal on Sept. 18, 1999. Bret Boone had two errors in the game and perennial Gold Glover Maddux had one. Boone also hit his 20th homer of the season, and catcher Eddie Perez went 3-for-4.
