WASHINGTON – The Braves plan to have starting pitcher Julio Teheran back from the 15-day disabled list late next week, along with catcher Tyler Flowers and closer Arodys Vizcaino.
Teheran, recovering from a right lat strain, is scheduled to make a rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Gwinnett. Barring any setbacks, he would then rejoin the Braves rotation Friday (Aug. 19) against the Nationals at Turner Field. His last start was July 30.
Vizcaino, who’s been out since July 16 with a strained oblique in his right side, is set to make rehab appearances for the Gulf Coast League rookie team on Saturday, Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday and low Single-A Rome on Thursday.
“After those three we’re probably looking at him, if everything goes right, maybe being activated on Saturday (Aug. 20),” Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said.
Flowers is scheduled to catch seven innings for Gwinnett on Saturday, which will be his first game since fracturing his hand July 10. He’s healed a little quicker than expected, and he’ll probably catch three injury-rehab games and DH in another before he’s activated.
“If all goes well with him he’ll be ready to come back by Thursday, something like that,” Snitker said.
Snitker also said that Joel De La Cruz’s right knee contusion was a lot better by Friday and that he would probably be ready to make his next start. He left Wednesday’s start at Milwaukee after four innings when a comebacker to the mound hit his knee on the final play of the inning.
