The Braves’ new stadium is about to get an important finishing touch: grass on the field.
“The sod goes in this week at SunTrust Park,” Greg Maffei, CEO of Braves owner Liberty Media, said Tuesday in a news release announcing the company’s financial results, “and we look forward to the Braves’ opening day (there) on April 14.”
With seats, video boards and most other elements already installed, the sod is one of the last missing pieces of the new ballpark.
Cobb County issued a certificate of occupancy for SunTrust Park to the Braves on Friday, signifying that the stadium had passed all required inspections by the county’s building department and fire marshal’s office. The certificate of occupancy, which Maffei called “a huge milestone,” is required before the general public can occupy a facility.
The Braves’ first scheduled game in the new stadium is a March 31 exhibition against the New York Yankees. That game, planned by Braves officials as a soft opening/dress rehearsal, will be open only to season-ticket holders.
On April 14, the Braves will play their first regular-season game in SunTrust Park against San Diego.
