Colon not fazed after being roughed up by Pirates
First thing’s first: Bartolo Colon is not injured. The Pirates knocked around the Braves right-hander in a Grapefruit League game on Monday but, for a 19-year veteran like Colon, health matters more than results in spring training.
“The best thing is, thank God, I feel well,” Colon said through an interpreter. “That’s the most important thing.”
With Colon’s health not in question, there wasn’t much to take away from his outing against the Pirates. They tagged him for eight hits and five runs over three innings and Colon also walked two batters.
The Pirates began the game by hitting three consecutive singles and ended up pounding out seven base hits. Their lineup included several players who are trying to make the roster and they took some aggressive swings against Colon.
“What can I say? Those guys came in here ready to hit,” Colon said. “They gave me a hard time and I didn’t really have the opportunity to work on what I wanted to. Credit to them.”
Colon said he’d hoped to fine-tune his location but instead served up appetizing: “When you leave it down the middle like that, anyone can hit it.”
