Andy Marte, once a top prospect for the Braves, was killed in a car crash in the Dominican Republic Sunday.

He was 33.

Metropolitan traffic authorities say Marte died early Sunday morning when a car he was driving hit a house along a road between San Francisco de Macoris and Pimentel, about 95 miles north of Santo Domingo, the capital.

Marte had strong seasons for Braves minor-league teams but played third base, which was secured by Chipper Jones with the major-league club. Marte played 24 games for Atlanta in 2005, hitting just .140 with four RBIs. The Braves traded him to the Red Sox for shortstop Edgar Renteria after ther season.

Marte played the past two seasons for the KT Wiz of the Korean Baseball Organization.

Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura was killed in a separate car crash in the Dominican Republic on Sunday morning. He was 25.
