Rookie reliever Shae Simmons was placed on the 15-day DL with a sore shoulder that he said has bothered him for perhaps a month, but which he hadn’t said anything about until the weekend. The team recalled Juan Jaime, another hard-throwing rookie reliever, from Triple-A Gwinnett to take the roster spot. “I held off telling them a little bit, because I didn’t think it was too serious,” Simmons said, “and I thought stretching it and everything would help..”

GM Sandy Alderson echoed Tony La Russa’s acknowledgment during the Hall of Fame weekend that La Russa “had his suspicions” about players’ steroid use in the 1990s, when Alderson was GM and La Russa was his manager with the A’s. Alderson told Newsday, “I spent a lot of time thinking about those kinds of circumstances over the years, eight or nine years ago. I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of any such conversation.” But Alderson added, “If you go back and look at what I’ve said on the record, yes, I had my suspicions. Beyond that, I’m just here to respond to what Tony had to say and leave it at that.”

Nationals

One day after notching his 200th career save, Rafael Soriano blew one, giving up four runs in the ninth inning Monday vs. the Marlins. It was his fourth blown save this season. “Bad day for me,” he said. “I feel fine, but every pitch that I threw, I had no command. Everything that I tried to throw didn’t work.” … There is still no timetable for Ryan Zimmerman, who was put on the 15-day DL on July 23 with a pulled hamstring. “The first two weeks are key,” manager Matt Williams said. “So once it gets healed, it starts to mat down a little bit and then you can start doing some strengthening exercises and then you get a better idea of where he would be.”

Phillies

The team released OF Tony Gwynn Jr., who had been designated for assignment last week. The son of the late Hall of Famer had batted .163 (16 for 98) with three extra-base hits and three RBIs. … Cole Hamels has pitched at least seven innings in 14 of his last 16 starts, with a 1.90 ERA over that stretch.
