Reigning American League MVP Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels left Sunday’s game in Miami shortly after spraining his left thumb while sliding head first into second base in the fifth inning.
There was no immediate timetable regarding his return.
Trout stole a base on the play and yelled in pain as he rose. He was examined by a trainer and stayed in the game and took the field in the bottom of the fifth. But he was replaced in the sixth.
The Angels announced that X-rays taken on Trout's hand were negative for any fracture.
"A scary thing," Trout said. "Hopefully it's just sore and just jammed, a bad jam. .. It was definitely sore for sure. It was aching."
Angels manager Mike Scioscia acknowledged that Trout could miss a day or two but seemed optimistic that the five-time All-Star won't need to placed on the DL for the first time in his career.
"The first indication is it just looks like a little sprain," Scioscia said.
Trout hit his 16th homer Saturday to take the major league lead. He’s hitting .337.
The Braves will see some former teammates Monday. Bud Norris, Andrelton Simmons and Cameron Maybin play for the Angels. But Yunel Escobar is on the disabled list.
The Angels (26-27) went 4-6 on their trip to fall below .500. They lost two of three to the Marlins.
