The Braves traded minor league pitcher John Cornely to the Red Sox for cash considerations Wednesday.

The deal came one day after the Braves designated Cornely for assignment in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster for veteran reliever Nick Masset, who signed a free-agent contract Tuesday for the rest of the 2015 season.

Cornely, 26, made his major league debut April 29, allowing three hits, four runs, one homer and one walk in a one-inning relief appearance against Washington. He was sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett soon after. He had a 4.42 ERA in 12 relief appearances for Gwinnett this season, with 24 strikeouts and seven walks in 18 1/3 innings.

Cornely was 17-10 with a 2.94 ERA in 158 relief appearances during five minor league seasons with the Braves, and had 309 strikeouts with 122 walks in 229 1/3 innings.
