BRANDON BEACHY

On one pitch making the difference:

“Yeah, I felt like I threw a pretty good pitch there. He just hit it. It was a good job by him. It might have been a strike but I don’t think it was up. I didn’t hang it. It was a decent pitch. Maybe I should have thrown it in the dirt, probably should have but he hit it, hit it hard, that’s what happens.”

On what was working during 10 in a row:

“I was hitting spots. When I’m hitting spots, getting ahead, putting guys on their heels a little bit, mixing it up pretty effective. Just kind of ran into a buzz saw there in the sixth inning.”

On focusing on throwing strike ones:

“Absolutely. You can talk to any pitcher in here and they’ll tell you if you’re up 0-1 it’s a way different at-bat than being 1-0. That’s always a focus especially as a starter, try to get ahead and then put them away.”

On what he would have thought if had been told you would get these results five starts into return from TJ:

“Going through it, I could tell you, I’m about two pitches away from having those five starts go pretty much how I’d like them to, but I can’t have those two pitches back, one of them being tonight….i’m going to return to form. The first five innings were good. Hopefully I can carry that into the sixth and seventh and eighth.”

On not throwing as many sliders tonight:

“I didn’t, but the ones I threw were good. I threw some for a strike, got a couple swing and misses on them. It’s not a pitch that I’m going to in late count, key situations right now but I’m progressing towards that. It’s definitely been better.”

FREDI GONZALEZ

On one pitch costing Beachy:

“Yeah, I thought he did fine. I really did. Just that one inning, give up three runs. Offensively that one inning we got right back into it, thought we had a game there but Davis that solo home run, a two-run cushion is a lot different than one run. I thought Beachy did OK. I thought Wheeler did a nice job, not giving us anything to hit. We had a tough time with him today. He’s pretty darn good. We couldn’t figure him out.”

On if this was best seen from Wheeler:

“Yeah I think so. I think the first time we saw him at our place when he had his debut he was a little more erratic but today his command was pretty good and all his other secondary pitches were down in the strike zone.”

On Justin being scratched:

“Just before we took batting practice, he did some stuff here in the cages working on some flips and stuff and it grabbed on him a little bit. He stayed in here, tried to get treatment and tried to get loosened up and it just didn’t quite get to the point where we felt comfortable running him out there. So we’ll check him again tomorrow.”

On if concern is high:

“No, it’s just a neck thing, in the trap(ezius) area, so maybe tomorrow we’ll get some treatment. Maybe tomorrow he’ll wake up feeling a little better and hopefully we’ll get him in there.”

JASON HEYWARD

On if best he’s seen of Zack Wheeler so far:

“I didn’t start the game the last time here but we got some knocks. I know Free hit a home run off him but Freddie’s a really good hitter. Zack threw well tonight. He was kind of wild effective, around the plate, explosive fastball.”

On maybe command better tonight than previous games:

“Yes and no. No and yes. He was around the plate enough though, I think wild effective really fits the description of him. Not to say he’s throwing balls to the backstop but he’s just around the plate enough and his fastball is electric enough with the movement, that it’s tough to square up.”

On the nine-pitch walk changing the game:

“I’m just trying to go up there and put up a good at-bat every time, battled with him all night, got into a 3-2 count with him the first at-bat. That at-bat right there was a big at-bat for us because Simba was able to hit a double for us, get to third, drive in three runs and get the game back close for us. That’s what it’s about. I feel like all night tonight we did a good job AB-wise, and of course we played some good defense again, and our pitching wasn’t terrible, hats off to him.”

On his catch, if had it the whole way:

“I feel like I should catch every ball hit out there. That’s just my mindset going after them. If I can’t get to it then I’ll know. But I know I’m going to give it my best effort and I just try to be in the right place at the right time.”

On if team every year that gives you trouble, this year the Mets:

“It can happen every year. I feel like they have a good team. I feel like this is a really good division. They’re playing really good baseball. They have some good starting pitching. I thought they always have. They’ve got two young guys that have come up and done outstanding. They always put up good at-bats to me, at the plate. They’re tough outs. And they didn’t have David Wright in there now. I think it’s a really good team, always have.”
