In an occurrence apt for baseball, Jason Vargas shut down the Braves on short rest.

Johan Camargo’s solo home run provided the Braves’ lone offense in a 4-1 loss to the Mets on Wednesday at SunTrust Park. It gave the National League East foes a series split.

The Braves had just two hits against Vargas in five shutout innings. He was forced into action due to the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard being placed on the disabled list Tuesday.

Adrian Gonzalez doubled in the Mets’ first run in the fourth against Julio Teheran. Brandon Nimmo’s RBI-single scored the Mets’ second run in the seventh.

Camargo hit a homer to right field - his second in as many days, in nearly the exact spot - in the seventh to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Former Brave Jose Bautista ripped a double with one out in the eighth against Shane Carle and came around to score an insurance run. Amed Rosario and Brandon Nimmo’s doubles produced another run in the ninth.

Teheran was solid, but didn’t get any help from his offense. He pitched seven innings of two-run ball, striking out three and walking three.

The Braves had a scoring chance in the eighth against the Mets bullpen, when singles by Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman put two runners on with one out. Nick Markakis grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Braves will carry a 32-23 record into a four-game series against the Nationals at SunTrust Park, beginning Thursday night. Washington, which moved into first place on Wednesday, has won eight of its last 10.
