Because of their decision to lockout referees, MLS and the Professional Referee Organization announced Wednesday that they will suspend several initiatives.
Suspended will be the two-minute suspension for players who require on-field treatment, the timed-substitution rule, which requires players to leave the field in 10 seconds or less or result in the oncoming player to have to wait 60 seconds, and in-stadium VAR announcements.
The league opens play Wednesday, with Miami hosting Real Salt Lake. Atlanta United will open Saturday at Columbus.
Additionally, the referee assignments for each match won’t be released until a few hours before games are scheduled to start.
