Guillermo Barros Schelleto is reportedly being interviewed by Atlanta United President Darren Eales and Vice President Carlos Bocanegra for the team’s soon-to-be vacant managerial position, according to TyC Sports.
Gerardo Martino will leave Atlanta United at season’s end. The club is hosting Portland in Saturday’s MLS Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
A text to Barros Schelleto hasn’t been returned. An Atlanta United spokesman declined to comment, citing the club’s policy about not discussing speculation or personnel not under contract with the club.
The interviews are reportedly happening in Argentina. If they aren’t there, Eales and Bocanegra may be in Miami for tonight’s CONCACAF Champions League draw. Atlanta United will compete in the tournament next year.
Eales said last week that the club wouldn’t begin its search until after the season.
“Our focus at the moment is wholly on the season and then we’ll get cracking and our sleeves rolled up,” he said last Thursday in New Jersey after Atlanta United advanced to the MLS Cup. “Not only on the manager, but we are looking to strengthen whenever we can , strengthen in depth , the first team, our USL team, the academy. we are always looking to get better in every way we can. in a salary cap league you can’t stay still.”
Like Martino, Barros Schelleto is Argentine. Formerly a standout with the Columbus Crew, he manages Boca Juniors, which he has led to two league titles. The club will soon play River Plate for the Copa Libertadores title.
TyC sports also reported that Eales and Bocanegra will interview Gabriel Milito. The former Argentine and Barcelona standout has managed Estudiantes, Independiente in Argentina and O’Higgins in Chile.
