Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez may have sustained an injury to his left thigh while playing for the Venezuelan national team Thursday. He is returning to Atlanta and will have a full medical assessment, including an MRI, performed this weekend.
Martinez started the World Cup qualifying game against Peru, but was subbed out less than 15 minutes into the second half. He walked off the field under his own power.
Martinez is the leading goal-scorer in MLS with five goals, all scored in the past two games.
He was acquired by Atlanta United on a loan from Torino in Italy. That loan was made permanent earlier this week.
Atlanta United has three more strikers on its roster, Kenwyne Jones, Brandon Vazquez and Bryan Rochez, should Martinez not be able to to play in the next game at Seattle. The team also has Romario Williams, who is on loan in Charleston.
