Trae Young will not be a starter in this year’s NBA All-Star game, which will be held March 7 at State Farm Arena, with the final vote tally and two starting lineups announced Thursday night.
There’s still a chance Young could be an All-Star, though, with NBA coaches selecting the reserves, who will be announced Tuesday.
The Eastern Conference starters: the Nets’ Kevin Durant (team captain as the player with the most votes in the conference), the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, the 76ers’ Joel Embiid, the Wizards’ Bradley Beal and the Nets’ Kyrie Irving.
The Western Conference starters: the Lakers’ LeBron James (team captain), the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic, the Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, the Mavericks’ Luka Doncic and Golden State’s Stephen Curry.
In determining starters, three frontcourt players and two guards from each conference, fan voting accounted for 50% of the vote, with media and players accounting for 25% each. Among Eastern Conference guards, Young finished sixth in fan rank, 11th in player rank and sixth in media rank. That gave him a weighted score of 7.25, which put him at No. 6 in that category. He also finished sixth in final fan voting totals (991,857), behind Beal, Irving, James Harden, Zach Lavine and Jaylen Brown.
Young was a starter in last year’s All-Star game and recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. His scoring numbers are slightly down this season, but the Hawks also are winning at a higher rate, starting out 12-16 compared with a 20-47 overall record in last year’s truncated season.
Young averaged 29.6 points and 9.3 assists last season and is averaging 26.5 points (13th in the NBA) and 9.3 assists (fourth in the NBA) this season.
