Karlesha Thurman says she only wanted to share a proud and happy moment with the person who matters most to her, but the photo she posted on Facebook has become controversial.
The photo that is creating the hot debate is of 25-year-old Thurman breast-feeding her daughter at her college graduation ceremony.
"Today" reports that Thurman earned an accounting degree at California State University, Long Beach. When her daughter became fussy during the ceremony, Thurman quieted her 3-month-old baby by breast-feeding her, and a friend thought it was "cool" so she took a photo.
Thurman posted the photo on the Facebook group page, “Black Women Do Breastfeed,” to support another mother who claimed she was given dirty looks when breast-feeding in public places. Thurman claims she didn’t realize that breast-feeding in public was such a controversial issue.
While Thurman received many positive comments on the breast-feeding photo, there were others who were critical of the image. Thurman eventually deleted the photo from Facebook.
Thurman says that the controversy will not stop her from breast-feeding in public.
