An Australian man says even his parents think he’s an “idiot” to surf a dead whale while hungry sharks circled in the water.
Harrison Williams, of Perth, Australia, was seen on video jumping from a friend’s boat and climbing on top of the dead whale, because one of his friends said “it would be pretty funny to surf the whale.”
Video from Seven News in Australia showed multiple sharks feeding on the whale while Williams sat waiting to be picked up by his friends.
"Mom thinks I'm an idiot, Dad's not too proud either," Williams told Seven News after the encounter off the coast of Rottnest Island.
Williams’ stunt was criticized by whale experts, who fear others will try and get similar photographs.
“It potentially could have had some critical consequences, not only for the person but also for the witnesses and other people that would have had to assist,” Department of Fisheries official Tony Cappelluti told Yahoo News. “Ninety-nine percent of the population would see that behavior as irresponsible.”
Harrison was apologetic afterward.
“Definitely not (wouldn’t do it again) … I’ve done it, I don’t need to do it again,” Harrison told Seven News. “Definitely it was a stupid act, didn’t mean to disrespect anyone.”
