Weekend roadwork will tie up traffic in Cobb, Midtown
Driving through Cobb County will be tricky again this weekend, and construction in Midtown near the Buford-Spring Connector also is expected to cause delays.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will completely close North Marietta Parkway from Cobb Parkway to Gresham Road, as well as the exit ramps from 1-75 northbound and southbound. These closures will continue the next four weekends.
Cobb drivers also will have to contend with nightly lane shutdowns on I-75 southbound from Chastain Road to Ga. 5. GDOT recommends drivers avoid the area if possible.
In Midtown, two left lanes will be closed all weekend on the northbound connector from Monroe Drive to the 1-85 exit for bridge repair. Heavy backups are expected.
Additionally, construction on the new 1-85/Ga. 400 interchange will close several lanes on surface streets and cause delays in the Buford Highway and Cheshire Bridge Road area.
Weekend weather should not delay any of the scheduled projects. Channel 2’s Severe Weather Team predicts plenty of sunshine and partly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the lower 70s and upper 60s, with lows dipping into the 40s Sunday morning.
Additional delays are expected on I-75/I-85 over the weekend as sports fans make their way Downtown.
Georgia Tech is playing Syracuse at Bobby Dodd Stadium at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Falcons are set to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Georgia Dome at 1 p.m. Sunday, and the Hawks will face the Memphis Grizzlies at Philips Arena at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Other weekend events include Atlanta Public Schools homecoming football games, held at the Georgia Dome beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, and the Rod Stewart concert at Philips Arena at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
