The weather on Christmas may be frightful, but Wednesday’s conditions will likely be delightful, according to the latest forecast.
The day is set to be dry and relatively mild ahead of what’ll be a wet Christmas Eve and the coldest Christmas Day in three decades, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.
Right now, it is 38 degrees in Atlanta, but temperatures in other parts of North Georgia are as low as 31 degrees, he said.
“You’ll want the heavier coat to start the day,” Monahan said.
The skies over Atlanta are clear, which will leave plenty of room for sunshine during the first half of the day. That’ll push temperatures up toward a high of 60 degrees in the afternoon.
However, temps will drop again going into the evening as clouds move into the area.
Despite the clouds, Wednesday will be dry, according to Monahan. There is no chance of precipitation in the forecast.
However, Thursday is an entirely different story, Monahan said. A cold front moving in late Wednesday guarantees Christmas Eve will be wet, with a 100% chance of rain and storms, according to Channel 2.
Monahan said Thursday’s low temperatures are likely to produce some flurries and snow showers in the afternoon.
“We are going to see some snow flurries possible on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” he said.
On Christmas, temperatures are expected to drop as low as 24 degrees, Monahan said. That’ll make it the coldest Christmas since 1989, when temperatures fell to 33 degrees, he said.
Though holiday travel is ramping up, it’s an easy ride through metro Atlanta. There are no major trouble spots, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
