Police said they believe he fatally shot his wife, 36-year-old Ginger Blackmon, between 8 and 9 p.m. at the house along Rice Road, Polk County police Chief Kenny Dodd told AJC.com.

“He came home and shot her before leaving the scene,” Dodd said, adding that they are not releasing the suspect’s motive at this time. Investigators said the couple hadn’t been married for long.

U.S. marshals tracked Blackmon to a relative’s house on Horsley Mill Road in a rural area east of Carrollton, Polk County police told the Polk County Standard Journal. When authorities approached the house, Blackmon ran out and into the woods, where agents found a camping site. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deployed a drone over the woods to track Blackmon, who eventually surrendered when he saw authorities on the scene, Dodd said.

Dodd added that although Blackmon was unarmed at the time, agents found a firearm at the scene. Authorities do not know if the gun is the murder weapon.

Jimmy Blackmon’s son, 21-year-old Corey Brian Blackmon, was arrested on an obstruction charge Oct. 18 after police said he assisted in his father’s getaway and then lied to authorities about it.

A truck driver told police he saw Jimmy Blackmon’s pickup at a Walmart along U.S. 411 in east Rome several hours after the shooting, Dodd said. The driver told Floyd County police he saw two men hugging before the older man, later identified as Jimmy Blackmon, got into his son’s truck and drove off.

“We had already talked with the 21-year-old son and he said he hadn’t talked to his dad and didn’t know where he was,” Dodd said. “We went back and Corey confessed that he picked his daddy up and dropped him off at Ga. 101 and Pleasant Valley Road in (southern) Floyd County.”

Corey Blackmon was booked into the Polk County Jail and later released on a $1,400 bond, the Standard Journal reported.
