Monday, Nov. 12, is the federal holiday recognizing America’s veterans. In advance of the official holiday, several governments across metro Atlanta have in recent days paused to pay tribute to those who have served the country. Here are some events taking place today, Nov. 11, long-recognized as Veteran’s Day, and later.
ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER
The Atlanta History Center will hold its annual Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. today in Veterans Park, at the corner of West Paces Ferry Road and Slaton Drive.
This year’s program will have a special focus on veterans who served in World War I. The history center program is the official state centennial commemoration of the armistice that ended the “war to end all wars” on Nov. 11, 1918.
Keynote speaker will be Christopher Jespersen, dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of North Georgia, an expert on American diplomatic history. Timothy Miller, an opera singer known for performing at Braves games, will sing the National Anthem.
After the ceremony, guests are invited to explore a pop-up exhibition in the Atlanta History Museum’s Allen Atrium, featuring rare World War I posters from Atlanta collector Walton Rawls and related artifacts from the history center’s collection. These rare posters were used by the U.S. government to build public support for the war effort.
The program and pop-up exhibit are free.
