Tampa police are investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy Sunday night.

According to a news release from Tampa police, Marterrance Albury fell out of a back passenger door of a moving SUV near the apartment complex where he lived with his family. A witness to the incident called 911 and said the boy hit his head as he fell from the vehicle. The child, who was also run over by the vehicle’s back tires, died from his injuries at a local hospital.

According to the release, the boy’s mother, Johntea L. Williams, went out with friends Sunday night and left the boy in the care his 17-year-old brother. The 17-year-old approached the scene about 30 minutes after the incident and told an officer he couldn’t find his little brother.

The boy’s mother, when told about the incident when she returned home around 4 a.m., “became hysterical and wanted to take her own life,” according to the release. She was taken to a hospital for her own protection.

Police are investigating why the boy was in the SUV and if he was pushed, according to the release. Police are also searching for the green Ford Expedition involved in the fatal incident.
