A heat advisory is in place for parts of North Georgia on Tuesday as the late summer heat wave keeps rolling along.

A few more storms in the forecast Tuesday will keep Atlanta just shy of 90 degrees, according to Channel 2 Action News. Areas near Athens and south of Atlanta are under a heat advisory from noon until 8 p.m. as heat indexes top 100 degrees.

The city is not included in the advisory area, but it will still be a hot one, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. Temperatures are expected to top out at 89, but Monahan humidity will push heat indexes higher.

“It’s going to be a steamy day — a ton of humidity, a ton of heat,” Monahan said. “It’s going to feel like it’s in the mid- to upper 90s today, and were going to have some storms, but not the entire day.”

Earlier is better to get in some time outdoors Tuesday. Through about lunchtime, Monahan expects North Georgia to stay mostly dry, although a few showers are possible. Early this afternoon, he said, “the sky is going to open up.”

“We’re going to see some heavy rain, some thunder, some lightning,” he said. “After about 2 p.m. you will have to watch out for those downpours.”

A 60% chance of heavy rain will remain in the forecast even after sunset, according to Channel 2. Rain chances drop to 20% for Wednesday for what Monahan said will be “a mainly dry and hot day.”

Thursday, however, is a scorcher, he said. There is no rain in Thursday’s forecast, and temperatures are expected to reach 98 degrees for the hottest day of the summer so far.

The Tuesday morning drive is off to a relatively smooth start, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Traffic reporter Mark Arum said there is “only one solitary problem on the interstates” at 6:30 a.m.

A crash was blocking multiple lanes of I-285 North at Cascade Road before authorities cleared the scene, leaving behind some heavy delays. Backups are expecting to continue easing on the Westside, the Traffic Center reported.

In DeKalb County, drivers who usually take Memorial Drive will need to find another route after a tree fell across the road at Candler Road. All lanes are closed and traffic is diverted, the Traffic Center reported.

Glenwood Road is a good alternate, Arum said.
