The state Department of Driver Services can now issue new drivers licenses swiftly in the event of an emergency or disaster in which people have lost or damaged their IDs.

The new Mobile Emergency Licensing Service allows DDS to securely access its internal network to process licenses via an encrypted tunnel to the state’s mainframe.

The department has already tested the process with the Georgia Air National Guard’s Savannah-based 165th Airlift Wing. With just electricity and a wireless broadband network connection, DDS securely processed real-time licensing transactions.

The DDS Mobile Emergency Licensing Service will be used following incidents such as fires or floods, when personal business often requires the use of identification, but natural victims are often unable to provide one due to loss or expiration. The service could also be used when a DDS customer service center is undergoing maintenance that requires the site to move to a temporary location for an extended period of time.
