What would it look like if the entire population of the city of Atlanta tried to pass through a single highway interchange on a single day?
It would look like your average weekday at the intersection of I-285 and Ga. 400 – which handles an estimated 416,000 vehicles a day, just a few thousand shy of the number of people who live in the city.
To untangle that monumental mess, the state highway folks plan to completely rebuild the interchange over the next five years, layering on flyover ramps and adding new lanes to both freeways for miles in either direction.
It’s the costliest road project in state history, and the debt it will leave in its wake could hamstring efforts to fix other traffic snarls for years to come.
