A Georgia judge was killed in a weekend wreck, authorities said.

Putnam County Chief Magistrate Ellen Pierce was on Ga. 44, about 10 miles north of Eatonton, when her 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup collided with a Ford F-250 hauling a boat, Sheriff Howard R. Sills said.

Pierce, 62, died from injuries sustained in that crash, which occurred about 6:37 p.m. Saturday, according to the sheriff.

The driver of the Ford was identified as Douglas Nelms of Buckhead in Morgan County. His condition was not known.

“The accident remains under investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office at this time,” Sills said.

Pierce was up for re-election this year and had three opponents qualify. Raised in Atlanta, she moved to Putnam County in 1990. She was appointed chief magistrate by the Superior Court Judges of the Ocmulgee Circuit and began serving Jan. 1, 1997, according to a biography on the court’s website.

Pierce was elected to the position in 1998 and re-elected in 2002, 2006 and 2014.
