DeKalb County police are investigating two fatal crashes that shut down I-85 and I-285 for hours Monday, according to authorities.
Four vehicles, including a tow truck and a tractor-trailer, were involved in a chain-reaction accident near I-85 and Chamblee Tucker Road about 10:15 a.m., police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent said.
One of the drivers, identified as 39-year-old Elisabeth Maldonado-Villa of Stone Mountain, died on the scene, officials confirmed. The crash blocked five of seven lanes for nearly two hours. Traffic did not start flowing again until just before 1 p.m.
The second wreck, which involved a car and a utility vehicle, occurred on I-285 near Glenwood Road just before 11 a.m., Vincent said.
The driver of the utility vehicle was pronounced dead after he was taken to a hospital, according to authorities. He was identified by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office as 23-year-old Daniel Echols.
The crash shut down southbound lanes of I-285 near Glenwood Road until just after 2 p.m., police said.
