6 things you need to know about the weather today
This story is being updated. Check back throughout the day.
1. In the metro area, all but Atlanta's north suburbs -- including Bartow, Cherokee, Forsyth and Hall counties -- have been dropped from a winter weather advisory. An advisory means there is at least an 80 percent chance of winter precipitation. Precipitation crossed into west Georgia at about 9 a.m and, afterward, light sleet was reported in Bartow, Cherokee and north Cobb counties. It did not cause any reported travel issues.
2. Significant accumulation is now forecasted only in extreme northeast Georgia: snow accumulations of up to 1 inch are possible through the afternoon, with ice accumulations of between .1 and .25 inch.
3. Gov. Nathan Deal signed an executive order Sunday declaring a state of emergency for disaster preparedness for the 15 north Georgia counties that were under the initial winter storm warning. This weekend, crews pre-treated metro roads with a "much-ballyhooed brine mix," itself a result of the state's widely panned response to last year's January storm.
4. For the rest of metro Atlanta, today could bring freezing rain and then a mix of freezing rain and rain by noon and all rain by 6 p.m. The rain could become mixed with freezing rain and sleet by midnight, then change briefly to light snow before ending Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said in the new advisory.
5. Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said tonight's lows will drop into the 20s. According to Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan, Tuesday's highs should again reach the low 40s while Wednesday will begin with lows in the mid-20s, and highs will only be in the upper 30s. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent today, and 20 percent on Tuesday and Wednesday.
6. About 33 flights have been canceled at Hartsfield -- most of them to cities in the Northeast, which has been buried under feet of snow. The airport said it will continue to monitor conditions and has a spate of de-icing solutions available. Delta has offered to waive certain change fees for passengers traveling today or Tuesday to, from or through Atlanta and 10 other cities in the Southeast, in case they want to change their travel plans.
