Q: What are the multicolored pipes that are being laid along Ga. 400, and what is their purpose?

— Patty Franklin, Alpharetta

A: The pipes are part of a $1.6 million project that will extend the NaviGator system into Forsyth County, which will help "mitigate the congestion currently experienced along this corridor during peak hours," according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The project includes installing fiber-optic communication, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, microwave radar detection, changeable message signs (CMS) and ramp meters on Ga. 400 from McFarland Parkway to Ga. 20/Buford Highway. Ramp meters at Ga. 20 and Ga. 141 will control the release of vehicles onto 400, "reducing congestion and stabilizing the flow of traffic." "Efficiency will be improved by reducing incident response/clearance times, potential reduction of secondary accidents and providing information to motorists of roadway/traffic conditions," DOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale told Q&A on the News in an email. The project is on schedule and expected to be completed by Sept. 29.
