A north Texas woman who admitted she threw her infant son into a door because he would not stop crying was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the Mineral Wells Index reported.
Brooke Lauren Reed, 26, pleaded guilty to a first-degree felony charge of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, the newspaper reported. District Judge Michael Moore sentenced Reed to 20 years in prison and levied a $5,000 fine, the Index reported. She was sentenced after testimony was given Thursday and Friday, the newspaper reported.
Reed will be eligible for parole in 10 years, according to the Index.
The boy “is now 2 years old and still can't speak," Palo Pinto County District Attorney Kriste Burnett said.
The incident occurred on the morning of April 11, 2017, in Mineral Wells, located 45 miles west of Fort Worth. Police and paramedics were called to a home after a 911 call from a woman described as hysterical, the Index reported.
The baby was found lying near the front door. Reed later admitted she threw her 2-month-old son into the front door because he would not stop crying, the newspaper reported.
The boy was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Fort Worth, The Dallas Morning News reported. He has since improved and was released into the care of his paternal grandmother, the Index reported.
The boy still will require attention, Burnett told the newspaper. Burnett said doctors believe the boy’s injuries have resulted in about a 10 percent brain loss and has affected the use of his left upper extremities.
"He is special needs and he always will be special needs," Burnett told the Index.
