SUNDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Rainy Valentine’s Day expected as showers continue
Couples looking to spend a romantic Valentine’s Day together will likely have to celebrate indoors this year as widespread rain continues across metro Atlanta.
North Georgia’s soggy streak should stick around through the weekend and well into the workweek, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. That’s not necessarily bad news for those planning dinner and a movie with their loved ones on Sunday, but the wet weather will probably rule out most outdoor plans.
“We have a wedge in place, and that’s going to keep us cloudy and very damp and cool as we head through the weekend,” Deon said.
Sunday will get off to a chilly start, and temperatures aren’t expected warm up much as clouds linger through most of the day. The afternoon high is expected to top out at about 50 degrees, according to the latest forecast.
The chance of showers is 40%, so the second half of the weekend may not be a complete washout, Deon said. Valentine’s Day will be mostly cloudy and cool, but there should be a break in the rain Sunday afternoon before widespread showers return in the evening.
“Weather conditions won’t be the best, but they won’t be all that bad,” Deon said. “We’re probably going to see a little less in the way of rain (on Sunday.)”
Atlanta’s wet weather will stick around through at least midweek, though there will be an occasional lull in showers. The chance of rain jumps to 70% on Monday, and more isolated showers are expected both Tuesday and Wednesday.
There aren’t any major construction projects underway this weekend, but the Georgia Department of Transportation has several overnight lane closures planned as crews make repairs to metro Atlanta’s roadways.
Drivers in Henry and Clayton counties should expect overnight delays on I-75 as crews shut down two lanes along a two-mile stretch of interstate, GDOT said. All lanes should reopen by 6 a.m. Monday.
In addition, the Georgia World Congress Center is bustling with people this weekend as a national cheerleading competition continues downtown. This three-day Cheersport Nationals competition has drawn an estimated 40,000 people from across the country, leading to an increase in Atlanta’s weekend traffic. Organizers say increased safety measures are in place amid the pandemic, but health experts are concerned the event could lead to a spike in coronavirus cases.
