After a frigid open to the weekend, Atlanta will thaw out Sunday with a short-lived respite from the bitter wintry temps.
Saturday was dry, sunny and cool, with temperatures dipping down into the 20s in some areas. Clouds were forecast to roll in overnight and help the chilly weather taper off.
“That will keep temperatures a little bit warmer, but it’s still going to be a cool stretch of the day on Sunday,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. “And then Sunday will turn milder.”
Sunday’s high is expected to be 60, yet there’s a 90 percent chance for showers.

Deon predicted a cloudy overcast throughout the day, with the chance for heavy downpours, and even thunderstorms, likely in the late afternoon and evening.
“With all the clouds around, we’re still watching out for the possibility of rain and storms. Especially as we get to the second half of the day,” she said.
That could mean soggy conditions for fans who visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium when the Falcons host the New Orleans Saints for their season finale Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is at 4:25 p.m.; the game will be broadcast on Fox.
It’s the last time rain is expected for several days in metro Atlanta. Temperatures throughout the week are expected to hover in the low to mid-50s.

Construction crews will be active Sunday throughout metro Atlanta. Motorists should be wary of road projects that will cause lane closures and traffic delays.
In Fulton County, drivers will have to deal with lane closures on I-75 between the Howell Mill and Cumberland Boulevard overpasses and along I-85 at Cheshire Bridge Road. Georgia Department of Transportation crews will be working to rehab bridge locations along the the two interstates.
Lanes will also be closed on I-285 at the I-675 interchange in DeKalb County for bridge work overnight Sunday. In Cobb County, a resurfacing project on Powder Springs Road will cause “rolling” single-lane closures between Windy Hill and Sandtown roads, according to DOT.
