Two Cobb County high school students were arrested Friday, charged with having unloaded guns after a classmate tipped off school officials.

“As a result of a student tip, our school administrators and school resource officers were able to confiscate two unloaded guns from two students without incident,” David Chiprany, Wheeler High School principal, said in a letter to parents.

Chiprany did not release the names of the students involved.

One of the teens, a 17-year-old, allegedly had a Phoenix Arms Raven .25 caliber handgun in the right front pocket of his jacket, his arrest warrant states. The gun’s identification number had been removed, the warrant states.

“The serial number on the weapon had obviously been obviously defaced and was not readable,” the warrant states.

He was charged with carrying a weapon in a school safety zone and having a gun with an altered ID mark, both felonies, in addition to misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a pistol by a minor, jail records show.

The teen was released from jail early Saturday after posting $16,720 bond, according to booking records.

Details about the second student’s arrest were not immediately available.

Chiprany praised the student who reported the weapons and encouraged others to report similar safety threats.

“According to school district policy, any student who brings a weapon of this nature to school will be expelled,” Chiprany wrote in his letter.
