A 17-year-old Barrow County student was killed when her bicycle was struck from behind by a suspected drunk driver, the Georgia State Patrol said late Monday.
The teenager was riding her bicycle east on Ga. 11 just before 9 p.m. Sunday, the State Patrol said. She was riding in the middle of the lane and her bike did not have lights, according to investigators.
Chrissy D. Rawlins, 41, of Winder, was driving east on Ga. 11 when the front of her vehicle hit the rear of the teenager’s bicycle, the State Patrol said.
The teenager was killed in the crash. Troopers charged Rawlins with DUI and child endangerment. No further details about the crash were available.
“The post will be consulting with the District Attorney in Barrow County to determine if further charges are warranted in this incident,” GSP said in an emailed statement late Monday.
Earlier Monday, Winder-Barrow High School posted about the death of a student on social media, but did not identify her.
“Please keep their family in your thoughts and prayers,” the school posted. “We will have counselors available during the school day if students are having a difficult time and need to talk.”
The school will also offer grief support virtually through Google Meet on Tuesday.
