Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta was put on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after several airmen received voice messages about an active shooter, the base said.

The base was closed for an hour and a half while investigators determined the calls were a hoax.

"A approximately 1:25 p.m. today the base activated lockdown procedures due to a perceived threat," the base posted on its Facebook page. "Emergency personnel responded to the situation immediately and the scene is secure. No casualties have been reported."

The lockdown was lifted at 2:55 p.m., the base said in a press release.

“Emergency personnel responded to the situation immediately and determined a threat did not exist,” the release stated.

Lowndes County emergency responders assisted officials at the base with the investigation.

“We take all active shooter reports seriously and I’m proud of the way our airmen and everyone on base responded,” said Col Billy Thompson, 23d Wing commander, in a statement on the base’s website. “We also appreciate the partnership and support we received from the Lowndes County and Valdosta first responders as the situation developed.”

Investigators are working to determine the source of the phone calls.

The base is located about 30 miles north of the Florida border.
