As the remnants of Hurricane Laura move through the Southeast, Georgians could wake up Saturday to severe weather as a result.

While Laura, which is now a tropical depression, is projected to move through Kentucky and West Virginia early Saturday morning, North Georgia is under a Level 1 risk of severe weather through 8 a.m., Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

“That’s the lowest risk possible, which is certainly good news for us,” he said. “But we still could see damaging thunderstorm wind gusts, an isolated tornado and isolated severe thunderstorms.”

The weather will change pretty drastically after noon, with the 60% rain chance dropping significantly, Burns said.

“The showers quickly dissipate,” he said. “If you have afternoon plans outside, it’s looking pretty good. There’s a chance for a sprinkle or two but not much more than that.”

If weather permits, the Georgia Department of Transportation has multiple roadwork projects planned for Saturday, which drivers will want to avoid.

There will be rolling closures on Ga. 400 South near Loridans Drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Rolling closures will also affect travel on I-75 North at Ga. 138 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., GDOT said.

The Perimeter’s inner loop will also be affected by rolling closures near Washington Road from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. And I-285 West will undergo the same rolling closures at Ashford Dunwoody Road from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, according to GDOT.

Without the risk for severe weather, Sunday will be slightly drier, Burns said. Atlanta has a 40% chance of rain and temperatures will climb to near 90 during the afternoon. The rain chance, however, goes back up to 60% Monday and doesn’t drop below 40% for the next few days, according to the latest Channel 2 forecast.
