Saturday morning will open with unseasonably cool temperatures before a warming trend takes hold, leading to a clear and comfortable weekend overall.
A weak cold front moving in from the north will keep skies mostly clear, but expect an unusual chill Saturday morning as the low temperature dips below 50.
“We’re going to start the weekend in the 40s,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said. “Saturday morning, 49 in Atlanta — a full 10 degrees colder than usual this time of year.”
With partly cloudy skies, Saturday is expected to warm dramatically through the afternoon, topping out at a high of 75 degrees, which is just a few ticks down the thermometer from the average high of 79.
“Seventy-five, partly cloudy skies and lighter winds are going to make for a comfortable Saturday,” Nitz said.
A few more clouds are expected Sunday for Mother’s Day, but the weather should be clear and warmer than Saturday.
“If you’ve got something you’re going to do with mom and it includes being outside, you should be fine,” Nitz said.

However, storms are predicted to move in from the northwest overnight Sunday, setting up for a rainy Monday morning commute and showers through the beginning of the workweek.
Good weather should keep traffic moving over the weekend, but it also means plenty of roadwork around the city. The Atlanta Braves are also playing at home this weekend, facing off against the Philadelphia Phillies shortly after 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Drivers would be wise to avoid the area around Truist Park close to game time, especially because the stadium is once again functioning at full capacity.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced a handful of projects over the weekend. Expect slowdowns on Powder Springs Road due to daytime flagging for a widening project in Cobb and Paulding counties. Similar work will be taking place elsewhere in Cobb as work crews will conduct overnight flagging on Highway 92 between North Cobb Parkway and Glade Road.
Southwest of town, there will be overnight closures on I-85 in both directions between Metropolitan Parkway and Senoia Road for striping work. Restriping will also be taking place on I-20 in Fulton and DeKalb counties on a section of the interstate between Windsor Street and Columbia Drive.
As usual, there will be lane closures around the junction of I-285 and Ga. 400 as the Transform 285/400 project continues.
