The long arm of the law has come to Roswell, and it comes with assistance from those big yellow buses.

Every Fulton County school bus has a large, flashing stop sign that signals to motorists when to stop for students. Those who disregard the stop arm are violating the law and potentially jeopardizing the safety of students.

As part of National School Bus Safety Week, Roswell Police Department are partnering with Fulton County Schools to crack down on drivers who speed past a stopped bus.

“No other traffic violation puts school children at as much risk as cars passing a school bus while loading and unloading children,” Roswell Police Chief Rusty Grant said.

Earlier this week, officers were stationed and catching lawbreakers at two Roswell bus stops:Holcomb’s Pond on Holcomb Bridge Road and ARIUM North Point on Alpharetta Highway. On Tuesday, 26 cars were pulled over for improperly passing a school bus and six motorists were ticketed for speeding in a school zone. Those being charged face up to $1,000 in court fines and six points on their driving record.

“This is a proactive collaboration between Fulton County School Police and the Roswell Police Department to protect our children,” said Mark Muma, director of the district’s Safety and Security Department. “Our goal is to make safety a priority for everyone in the community, not just students and parents.”
