Gov. Nathan Deal’s office is contributing $1,000 to a reward to find a 76-year-old Athens man’s killer.
Athens Clarke County police found Edward Davidson dead from a gunshot wound at his residence on Jefferson River Road on Nov. 26.
Police said Davidson and his wife were in bed when they heard someone breaking into their home. He was fatally shot after confronting the intruders. His wife, who hid in a bathroom and called 911, was not injured in the nighttime assault.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Deal authorized a $1,000 reward for information in the case that leads to an arrest. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000, and the GBI has also offered a reward, the amount of which will be determined by the quality of the information.
The family believes at least two people were involved in the home invasion in northwest Athens.
“Maybe to the intruders, his life didn’t mean anything, but it meant everything to us,” said son Troy Davidson told Channel 2 Action News. “Why would somebody take a life of a 76-year-old man that has never done anything to those individuals? Why?”
Neighbors believe Davidson’s home was targeted because the garage door was open and no vehicle was inside..
