Alabama Substitute Teacher Arrested after Gun Reportedly Discharges in Pocket

A substitute teacher for a first-grade class in Alabama was arrested after a gun in his pocket discharged Friday afternoon, The Cullman Times reported.

Henry Rex Weaver, 74, was charged with possession of a deadly weapon on school grounds, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, WBRC reported.

According to police, Weaver was substituting at Blountsville Elementary School in Blountsville when the gun discharged in his pocket. There were children in the classroom when the gun discharged, the Times reported. Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey said one student was struck by a fragment, AL.com reported. The child was treated and released, the Times reported.

"It (the sound of the gun) alerted administrators,'' Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon told AL.com. "He was detained until we could get him in our jail.

“Obviously I’m concerned about a substitute teacher bring a gun to school, and what we can do to prevent that in the future.”
