Atlanta police shot one person Thursday afternoon while searching a Welch Street home for drugs.

“During the process of actually serving that search warrant, officers encountered an armed subject,” Capt. Paul Guerrucci with Atlanta police said. “During that encounter, shots were fired and the subject ended up sustaining a gunshot wound.”

The suspect, whose name was not released, was shot at least once around 3:30 p.m. outside the home, located in the 900 block of Welch Street in southwest Atlanta, police said. The suspect was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his condition was not immediately known, police said.

Drugs were found inside the home, and the suspect’s weapon was also recovered, Guerrucci said. Several people were home at the time of the shooting, he said.

No officers were injured.
