A Tennessee woman claimed she was pregnant, and that her boyfriend was the father. Only Catherine Goins wasn’t expecting a baby. Instead, she allegedly killed a mother of three in order to take that woman’s baby, police in northwest Georgia said Wednesday.
Catherine Goins, 37, of Hixson, Tenn., was denied bond Thursday afternoon in the Catoosa County Magistrate Courthouse. Goins allegedly devised a plan to steal another woman’s baby and claim it as her own, according to the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office. While pretending to bring baby clothes to a woman, Goins allegedly shot and killed her, then drove away with a 3-year-old and a 3-week-old, police said.
Natalia Brianne Roberts, 30, of Lafayette, died Friday after being shot in a Ringgold home, according to police. Goins allegedly asked Roberts to come to her former boyfriend’s home to give the new mother baby clothes. But there were no clothes, according to police. No information was released regarding how Goins allegedly convinced Roberts to go to the home.
“Once at the residence, Natalia was going down a flight of stairs where Catherine Goins shot her in the back of the head with a .380 caliber handgun,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “The two had not met before this day.”
Goins allegedly tried to clean up the crime scene, and called the boyfriend to tell him she had shot someone in the house, according to investigators. Then, Goins left the home with the two children, but later returned at the ex-boyfriend’s urging.
Goins initially told police that she shot an intruder in the home. But deputies uncovered a deadly plot during several days of investigating, the Catoosa sheriff said.
On Tuesday, Goins was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the Catoosa Sheriff’s Office said. U.S. Marshals arrested Goins at a Tennessee home Tuesday evening, according to police. She is expected to be extradited to Georgia.
Roberts, a single mother, is survived by three daughters, according to her online obituary. Her funeral will be held Friday.
